Black Dog Radio Presents.......Folk At The Meadows

We are delighted to present the wonderful AUKA and David Grubb at 'Folk at the Meadows'

David will be presenting his brand new record "Circadia" to us on the night.

AUKA

“Auka” comes from an Old Norse word meaning to grow or augment - a term that perfectly sums up the band’s organic and distinctive approach to music-making, where folk melodies gradually swell from intimate and sublime to turbulent and powerful.

Since releasing their acclaimed debut album Evergreen in 2021, the Sheffield trio have honed their sound performing at festivals and venues across the UK. Kirsty Lomax’s lyrical Irish flute and whistle melodies are accompanied by intricate and precise rhythmic guitar from Matt Gilchrist – which is further underpinned by expressive jazz-folk double bass from Joss Mann-Hazell (Mishra).

The three instruments weave between melodic and accompanying roles to create a diverse and compelling sound.

Autumn 2023 saw the release of Auka’s highly anticipated second album, Wild Waters. This recording was fuelled by their passion for the rewilding and Right to Roam movements, in particular the need for access to blue spaces for wild swimming. The music is influenced by the ephemeral nature of rivers and streams, and pays tribute to the importance of protecting our wild waters.

DAVID GRUBB

“A musician who doesn't play by anybody else's rules” R2 Magazine

David Grubb has become a sought-after musician, renowned for his ability to seamlessly blend musical styles. Primarily a violinist, he has shared the stage and studio with notable acts including Novo Amor, Jim Ghedi, Hailaker, Toby Hay, and collaborated with producers Ali Chant, Neil Davidge, and Ed Tullett. His work has taken him to North America, Europe, Asia, and New Zealand, performing in iconic venues such as The Barbican Centre (London) and Bowery Ballroom (NYC).

Perched on the Firth of Forth overlooking Edinburgh and East Lothian, David grew up in the small village of East Wemyss on the east coast of Scotland. It was here where he first picked up his grandad’s old fiddle and discovered his passion for music. Influenced by the Scottish traditional scene, his classical training, and his parent’s eclectic musical palette, he found inspiration in musical experimentation and sonic innovation. Now, firmly rooted in Cardiff, Wales where he has proudly called home for 15 years, David has become an integral part of the vibrant UK music scene, leaving an indelible mark on a multitude of projects.

An instrumental story teller, David’s musical prowess goes beyond traditional boundaries, crafting compositions that weave together seemingly disparate musical elements into conceptual journeys. His original offerings challenge the conventional perceptions of genre, inviting audiences into immersive sonic landscapes where each note tells a story.

David’s latest release "Circadia" explores the human subconscious, leading listeners through a typical sleep cycle and encountering weird and wonderful phenomena along the way.
